Most Californian police forces use the .40 Smith & Wesson or a Baretta Model 96 (also .40). Police officers can purchase their own guns to use, but it absolutely has to be .40 cal. For instance, a .40 cal Glock Model 23 is acceptable. The only reason police officers usually don't carry their own handguns with them is because if they shoot someone, those guns are taken to be processed and they won't see it back for easily a year.
